Brownies—just the word conjures up visions of rich decadent chocolate and ooey-gooey deliciousness. Plus, brownies are an ideal choice to share at a summer picnic or barbecue because they are easy to tote and serve. If you are looking for a great brownie recipe, here’s one that we recently worked on that got great reviews from our tasters.
Cream Cheese Brownies are a classic that many of us have enjoyed at one time or another. Our goal with this recipe was to reduce the calories and fat of the original version, but not cheat on flavor. We wanted the new healthified version to be just as delicious, maybe even better than the original. We knew that we could do better than the 210 calories, 12 grams of fat and 35 milligrams of cholesterol that each of the classic brownies contained.
We tested our recipe with a variety of amounts of egg product, egg whites, applesauce and oil. We varied the layering technique and played around with the amount of chocolate chips. We tested and tasted until we thought the brownies were as delicious as we wanted. We think our final brownies are rich, chewy and decadent. I think they are really pretty too—don’t you?

The new version of Cream Cheese Brownies boasts only 160 calories, 6 grams of fat and 5 milligrams of cholesterol per brownie—a significant drop from the classic version. But the best part is that nobody at your gathering will be aware that they are indulging in a healthier choice—these are truly yummy and perfect for the upcoming holiday weekend!
