I admit it. I love sweet foods and I adore bread. But I try to be selective about where to "spend" my calories. Too often, treats and breads look good--but after one bite, I realize they just aren't worth the toll they take on the waistline!
Recently, when we were working up the recipe for Healthified Monkey Bread or as I know it, Pull Apart, I decided to give it a try at home. I'm usually a scratch baker, so my husband was shocked and excited to see Pillsbury rolled dough in the fridge! Back in his bachelor days, he'd been known to pop open a tube, bake and eat an entire batch! Only now he lives in a healthified house that's tempered his enthusiasm.
Keeping an eye on fat and calories, I opted for the Country Italian Bread variation (see recipe tip) which is lower in both. I opened one can of dough and made 10 slices, then quartered each slice for a total of 40 pieces. I repeated that with the second can of dough--then followed the rest of the simple recipe exactly. My 7 year old son was an eager kitchen helper being sure each piece was thoroughly coated in cinnamon sugar. And here's the amazing result:
Healthified Monkey Bread
Needless to say, this recipe is worth the 200 calories and 4 grams of fat per serving! It's a delicious treat that's so easy to make. We may have to invite friends over for brunch and make another bread to share. Mmmm!
